Miss Lily

Miss Lily

This photo was taken on my Canon EOS 60D on the Av exposure mode, ISO 640, 141mm, f11, 1/50. I was trying for a long time to take this photo of Lily, as she kept moving and she would crawl too close for me to keep my focus. In the end, I put her in the high chair with a rusk, which meant I captured a crumbly face. However with the food and highchair, I was able to make Lily face our back window, w... »

composition tutorial: eliminate distractions

Eliminating distractions is, in my opinion, is the most important thing you can do to quickly improve your photography. And it should be simple. But it’s often not… Our brain has many ways of helping us handle the huge volumes of information we are subjected to every second. One of the mechanisms it uses is filtering. When we are paying attention to one thing, we filter out unnecessary... »

My handsome man

My handsome man

I love the detail in the two images where he’s eating a cookie. These were taken at full zoom, on AV setting, ISO 200. My only complaint is that the blueness of his eyes is hidden in the shadow of his cap. Is there a solution to this? Other than remove the cap. I really like the action of Lachlan jumping off the rock. However it is very dark. This was on TV setting, with ISO still at 200. Wo... »

composition tutorial: what’s your angle?

composition tutorial: what’s your angle?

a simple composition tutorial Here’s a simple photo composition tutorial that will turn your photos from snapshots to stunning images that will make people say “Wow”! The shooting angle means, in simple terms, where you stood (or crouched or sat or even lay down) to take the photograph. I bet, like most people, most of the time, you were standing up, looking face-on at your subje... »

play photo a day with me

The other day I was browsing through some of my bookmarked web pages and I found my 2007 photo a day blog. It reminded me of how much that challenge helped me to get better both technically and creatively at photography. I hadn’t thought of that blog since I stopped posting to it but flicking through it brought back memories of that time that still make me smile. See below for a sample of Ja... »

Seagulls and Sea!!!

Seagulls and Sea!!!

Here are my favourite images from the workshop at Dee Why last weekend. This was the first time I’ve taken my camera off the auto setting so it was fun to play around with aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I would love to know how you think I could improve these shots. Thanks so much, Sally »

pics from this morning

pics from this morning

These images were sent to me by Emma after our morning workshop at Balmoral Beach. I think she did a lovely job and really my critique comes down to very minor things: In the first image (taken in full sun) there is a shadow across her nose that I find just a little distracting. You did very well though considering the sun was quite bright. Great job with the challenging light. In the second, grea... »

the ice cream shop

the ice cream shop

I took this picture of my youngest son around 4pm in a shaded area. We were enjoying the weather outside of an ice cream shop. I’m that mom who always has her camera on-hand and ready! I wish I would’ve jotted down my camera settings but I believe the ISO was 800 and aperture was 2.5, but I can’t recall the shutter speed. I purchased my dslr 3 months ago and I am so in love with ... »

photos from Dee Why Beach

Dear Robyn, I look forward to any tips for improvement. I noticed a lack of clarity in some photos when enlarged even though I shot them in RAW format. Kind Regards, Rosemary   »

Thomas

This is a post from Debbie who said “I think I got the sparkle in his eyes”. And you certainly did Debbie. This looks like a reflection of a window from an inside shot. Windows give really nice catchlights (sparkle). And I love the expression on his face. It looks like he’s saying “What you doing mum?”. Well done. My feedback would be to look at what’s in the ba... »
